Job Description

Fayyaa Integrated Development Organization (FIDO) is an Ethiopian resident charity organization established in the year 2002 by Ethiopian volunteers. Since its establishment, the organization has been implementing various projects in Oromia, SNNP, Benishangul Gumuz and Somali regional states as well as in Addis Ababa City Administration. Currently FIDO is also implementing projects under the emergency and relief department.

Job Description: Emergency WASH Engineer

Position Overview:

As an Emergency WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Engineer, you will play a critical role in providing technical expertise and support in emergency response situations. Your primary responsibility will be to design, implement, and manage water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions in emergency settings. You will work closely with other team members, stakeholders, and local communities to ensure effective and efficient WASH interventions during humanitarian crises.

Key Responsibilities:

Emergency Response Planning:

  • Contribute to the development of emergency response plans and strategies related to water, sanitation, and hygiene.
  • Assess the WASH needs and vulnerabilities of affected populations and propose appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to coordinate emergency response efforts and ensure a comprehensive approach.

Technical Design and Implementation:

  • Design and develop WASH infrastructure, facilities, and systems in line with humanitarian standards and guidelines.
  • Conduct assessments, surveys, and site visits to determine appropriate WASH solutions based on the specific context.
  • Oversee the construction, installation, and maintenance of WASH facilities (e.g., water supply systems, latrines, handwashing stations) to ensure quality and sustainability.
  • Facilitate the development of bill of quantity for water supply schemes and sanitation facilities for project design and implementation per the standard.

Water Supply and Sanitation:

  • Assess water sources, quality, and quantity, and implement appropriate water treatment and distribution systems.
  • Develop and implement sanitation facilities and waste management systems, including solid waste disposal and excreta management.
  • Promote safe hygiene practices, such as handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and environmental sanitation.

Capacity Building and Training:

  • Provide technical training and support to local staff, community members, and partner organizations on WASH-related topics.
  • Facilitate workshops and awareness campaigns to promote the adoption of good hygiene practices and behavior change.
  • Foster community participation and ownership in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of WASH facilities.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Develop monitoring systems and tools to assess the effectiveness and impact of WASH interventions.
  • Regularly collect and analyze relevant data to track progress, identify challenges, and recommend improvements.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports and document best practices, lessons learned, and case studies for sharing within the organization and with external stakeholders.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in hydraulic engineering, water resources management, or a related field.
  • Proven experience 2 years in emergency response or humanitarian contexts, preferably in WASH-related projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of WASH principles, standards, and best practices in emergency settings.
  • Strong technical skills in water supply and sanitation construction activities.
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools for design, modeling, and data analysis.
  • Excellent project management skills, including the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in challenging and rapidly changing environments.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English. Proficiency in other languages, especially those relevant to the deployment location, is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote or insecure areas for extended periods.
