Crop Protection Manager

Job Purpose: Tinaw Business S.C. is legally registered entity established in accordance with the Commercial Code of Ethiopia. Located in Guraghe Zone of the Central Ethiopian State the Company is currently engaged in the production and export of roses. The companys long term objective is to diversify its portfolio in different business sectors and thereby contribute to the economic development of the country and bring comparable returns to its shareholders. We are seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Crop Protection Manager to manage the implementation of pest and disease management programs within our flower farm. The ideal candidate will ensure the health and vitality of our crops while minimizing the use of pesticides and environmental impact.

Duties and Responsibilities:For the realization of the aforementioned job purposes, the major duties and responsibilities of the person assigned as Crop Protection Manager are mentioned as follows:

• Develop and implement integrated pest management strategies to protect crops.

• Monitor crops for Identification of major pest and disease challenges at the farm site.
• Develop and implement strategies to monitor, prevent, and control pests and diseases.
• Implement control measures and monitor their effectiveness over a period of time.
• Participate in the preparation of spray schedule.
• Get advance and current information on the health condition of greenhouse plants with a view to preparing chemical mixes and ensure proper and timely implementation.
• Report immediately when conditions affecting the already set spray plan occur.
• Regularly flows-up the maintenance of spray line, spray valves, spray hose pipes, nozzles, machines etc. and inform maintenance team well in advance in order to have a smooth operation of spraying during spray work.
• Coordinates the activities of spray workers and follow-up strictly all spray workers in the following regards,
• • Spraying in the morning and evening
  • Punctuality,
  • Discipline,
  • Usage of personal protective equipment such as Spray Suits, clothes, mask, gloves, etc.

• Based on scout data and in cooperation with the concerned Production managers and greenhouse supervisors, the protection manager is responsible for finding out the location of infestation in their respective greenhouses and follow- up the spray worker to have better and effective spray in such areas.
• Monitor, in collaboration with Assistant Production Manager and greenhouses supervisor, the sprayed areas in the greenhouses if infestation is controlled.
• Record all the details of spray to be maintained by him.
• Chemicals to be sprayed should be requested formally by him are required to be approved by Farm Manager, in consultation with the production managers, and then collect from chemical store.
• Make sure that the empty cans or foils are kept properly in line with the available procedures and guidelines of the Company on waste disposal.
• Regularly follows-up and checks when chemicals are mixed. No chemical is mixed without the knowledge and order of the Spray Supervisor and Protection Manager..
• Coordinates, direct, and manages all the activities that fall in the domain of Spray department.
• Prepare annual chemical and PPE requirements of the department at start of new budget year.
• Inform in advance the Farm Manager about the required items and materials for the operation of his department.
• Regularly check and ensure proper nozzles discharge rate and ensure that spray is effective.
• Ensure that disposal of the Spray department are kept and handled properly in accordance with certification standards.
• The protection manager is required to document all activities pertaining to his department.
• Report without delay to the Farm Manger when he/she encounters problem in relation to spraying activities.
• Ensure that residuals are managed properly.
• Develop comprehensive data and recording on the expiry date of chemicals available at the stock, and inform the Farm Manager if there are chemical to expire within the coming six months
• Initiate applicable IPM methods whenever possible and implement when approved.
• Evaluates the performance of the persons who are under his immediate supervision.
• Prepare and submit monthly reports to the Farm Manager.
• Undertakes all activities in relation to the Spray department as ordered by the concerned persons.

- Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Plant Science, Entomology, or related field. Master's degree preferred.

- Proven experience in crop protection or pest management roles within horticulture farms, preferably in Rose farm.

- Strong understanding of integrated pest management (IPM) principles and practices.

- Knowledge of common pests and diseases affecting flower crops, as well as effective control measures.

- Familiarity with pesticide regulations, safety protocols, and environmental stewardship principles.

- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic agricultural environment.
