The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Ethiopia is looking to hire an experienced, highly motivated and qualified person to fill the position of Driver Light Vehicles based in Bahir Dar.
Terms of Employment: Fixed term contract until December 2024 with possibility of extension based on budget availability.
PURPOSE
- The Light Vehicles Driver transports people and goods in a safe and timely manner, in accordance with ICRC rules and regulations and national traffic laws.
RELATIONSHIPS
- Internally, interacts mainly with logistics staff and other ICRC employees.
- Externally, interacts with people related to their work, e.g. traffic police, weapon bearers at checkpoints, fuel-station personnel, etc. May interact with beneficiaries.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Understands and adheres to the seven Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
- Understands and adheres to the ICRC Code of Conduct
- Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement
- Respects and observes staff regulations and security rules at all times
- Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times
- Develops and maintains a pleasant and conducive working environment with colleagues and line managers
- Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC
- May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Functional Responsibilities:
- Drives light vehicles to transport people and/or material in strict adherence to internal security rules and national traffic laws.
- Constantly monitors security conditions on the road.
- Ensures that goods are stored inside the vehicle according to local, international and ICRC safety standards (attachment and distribution of goods, etc.).
- Checks their assigned vehicle(s)' equipment, general functioning and body condition and ensures that it is kept fuelled and clean inside and out. Follow morning check-up, cleaning and before departure procedure.
- Checks that trips have been authorized where necessary.
- Immediately reports accidents, defects and/or missing equipment to management.
- Can act as head of convoy as needed (in charge of the driver(s), application of security rules and time-frame for the convoy).
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Transport
- Delivers mail or goods as requested
- Provide assistance to the passengers as needed
Security
- Informs Car Dispatcher about time of departure and return to the base
- Makes sure that vehicle is parked in safe area all the time and in āready to leaveā position.
- Is aware of, and reacts to the current security situation
- Respects ICRC internal security rules all times
- Respects the laws in general and traffic regulations in particular
- Use the security belt and oblige passenger to use it
- Drives only ICRC goods and personnel in ICRC vehicles unless instructed differently by superior
- Fills in relevant field trip and other form
- Avoids using mobile phones while driving and respects radio communication procedures
- Is aware of the rules concerning correct use of vehicle, and carriage of passengers and goods
- Acts as convoy leader when required
Fuel
- Ensures that the vehicles are always refueled in time
- Drives in manner that minimizes fuel consumption and maintains vehicle in good condition
- Fills in refueling data in logbook and fuel control sheets
- Hands over any fuel bills to dispatcher at the end of the trip
Load responsibility
- When applicable, is present at the loading and unloading of goods and confirms that the quantity corresponds with relevant documentation
- Is responsible for goods documentation
- At unloading presents documentation to the receiver of the goods to be signed and returns it to dispatcher
- Participate to the loading and unloading of his vehicle
General
- Drives in safe, responsible and accident free manner
- Adapts the way of driving to the weather and road conditions
- Reports to dispatcher about road conditions, eventual problems etc.
- Reports vehicle accidents immediately using appropriate forms (including minor scratches)
Vehicle's checking & maintenance
- On each handover and once a week checks vehicle equipment and body condition assigned for checking through checking lists
- Is able to change tyre or bulb on the road
- Is responsible for equipment, tools, chains, spare tyres placed in the vehicles and reports any changes to Car Dispatcher
- Informs Car Dispatcher about service, maintenance and other possible repairs needed in advance and fills in technical report
- During the trips monitors all cabin instruments to be able to promptly react if needed
Others
- Replaces other driver during their absence
- Performs any other activities upon request of immediate supervisor
- When required, acts as translator/FO for the delegate
- Back-up for the vehicle dispatcher
- Flexibility and Willingness to work irregular schedules

Certifications/Education Required
- Minimum Secondary school diploma.
- Minimum 3rd grade or equivalent Driving License held for at least five years.
- Minimum of 3 yearsā experience, preferably in an INGO
- Knowledge (spoken and written) of Amharic and English
Professional Experience Required
- Experience in a similar position an asset.
- Automobile maintenance experience (Oil checks, changing tyres, etc.).
- Basic knowledge of mechanics is an asset.
- Good knowledge of the area of assignment.
