Program Summary

Mercy Corps Ethiopia currently secured USAID/BHA funded multisectoral response program entitled ‘Humanitarian Assistance for Conflict-Affected Populations (HACAP)” in Oromia and Afar regions. The goal of the proposed program is to increase access to Life-saving Services for Conflict-affected IDPs, Returnees, and Vulnerable Populations through provision of integrated Multi-Sectoral Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Promotion (WASH), Nutrition and Protection support and, Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) in five Woredas of Oromia and Afar regions.

General Position Summary

The Midwifery Nurse is responsible for the technical quality and delivery of high-quality maternal health services. The role involves working with the mobile health and nutrition team in the assigned woreda to enhance service accessibility for mobile communities. Key responsibilities include implementing antenatal and postnatal care services, supporting pregnant mothers in delivering at health facilities, arranging referral services, providing family planning consultations, immunizing children, and women, and delivering health education as per pastoralist area guidelines.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Strategy & Vision

  • Collaborate with team members to integrate nutrition and health services effectively.
  • Work with local authorities and partners to harmonize efforts for better impact and sustainability.
  • Stay informed and adapt to changing situations and contexts.

Program Management

  • Provide maternal and child health services, including ANC, PNC, family planning, and immunizations.
  • Facilitate training and work closely with MOH staff at health posts, centers, hospitals, and district levels.
  • Organize and report on ANC, PNC, EPI, family planning services, and health education.
  • Ensure referral systems and linkages between services and health facilities.
  • Adhere to safe motherhood protocols for better maternal health service delivery.
  • Provide onsite training to Health Extension Workers (HEWs) and nurses.
  • Ensure job aids are available at health posts.
  • Compile and share weekly reports from mobile service delivery points.
  • Participate in capacity-building training and health education sessions.
  • Follow up on absentees and defaulters from ANC services.
  • Support program integration with nutrition services through proper referral linkages.

Team Management

  • Support and train health center staff for capacity building.
  • Ensure health professionals participate in daily routine work for sustainability.
  • Provide onsite training and mentoring to HEWs and nurses.
  • Assist in decision-making for patients at severe risk and needing hospital transfer.
  • Support integration with DPPO and MoH through training and supervision.
  • Liaise with the woreda health office and health centers for vaccine and family planning supplies.
  • Mentor HEWs at facility level to enhance maternal care services.

  • Train and support community volunteers to convey health messages clearly.
  • Maintain relationships with local health authorities for smooth service integration.

  • Diploma or BSc in Midwifery with a minimum of four years of experience in an NGO environment, including two years in clinical settings.
  • Training and experience in safe motherhood practices, family planning, and IMNCI/ICCM.
  • Skills in program planning, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Experience in peer group training and counseling.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Strong human relations skills.
  • Willingness to work under pressure and extend working hours.
  • Proficiency in English and Afarigna language.
