Executive Director

The Center for Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) Seeks to hire Executive Director. CARD, a leading Ethiopian human rights organization, is seeking a visionary and experienced Executive Director to lead our organization into the future.

CARD is a board-led, non-profit organization working to advance a conducive civic, media, and digital space for the respect of human rights and the promotion of democratic culture in Ethiopia. We envision an Ethiopia where human rights are respected and a democratic culture flourishes.
Who We Are Looking For
A highly motivated and strategic leader with a deep understanding of human rights and extensive experience working on human rights issues in Ethiopia. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional leadership, management, and fundraising skills, along with a commitment to building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Law, Management, Political Science, Governance, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience (depending on educational attainment).
• Fluency in Amharic and English.
• Deep understanding of human rights principles and international frameworks.
• Proven experience working on human rights issues relevant to Ethiopia (e.g., freedom of expression, digital rights, democratization, minority rights, women's rights).
• Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of managing and motivating teams.
• Experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and resource mobilization.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships with donors, government officials, and community leaders.
• Ability to develop and implement a strong organizational vision and strategy.
• Understanding of the security environment in Ethiopia and experience working in challenging contexts.

Desired Qualifications

• Fluency in additional Ethiopian languages.
• Experience securing funding from diverse sources.
• Understanding of Ethiopian law and governance.
• Passion for human rights and a deep commitment to democratization.
• Strong understanding of the Ethiopian sociopolitical context.
• Experience building partnerships with local and international NGOs.
• Excellence in using digital technology for advocacy.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement CARD's long-term vision, strategic plan, and budget.
• Lead the organization in achieving its human rights objectives.
• Oversee all programs and activities.
• Secure funding from diverse sources to ensure the organization's sustainability.
• Represent CARD in interactions with government officials, donors, and the public.
• Ensure adherence to CARD's bylaws and compliance with regulations.
• Lead staff recruitment, performance management, and development.
• Communicate effectively with all stakeholders
