INVITATION FOR AN EXPRESSION OF INTEREST TO PARTNER WITH MICRO-SMALL ENTERPRISE

1. Background

Oxfam GB was founded in 1942 in the United Kingdom and the organization has worked in Ethiopia since 1970 to address the underlying causes of poverty and marginalization by supporting sustainable livelihoods, and providing water, sanitation, and other humanitarian assistance. Currently, Oxfam is implementing programs directly and through programs across all Regions of the country. 

On its ten-year strategic plan lasting from 2021-30 Oxfam has identified six thematic/programmatic areas of which Sustainable Food and Climate Change is the one. Under this program, general attention was given to the overall impact of climate change and effectiveness the of climate change policies and programmes through policy influencing. 

Climate change is deeply intertwined with global patterns of inequality. The poorest and most vulnerable people bear the brunt of climate change impacts yet contribute the least to the crisis. As the impacts of climate change mount, millions of vulnerable people face disproportionate challenges in terms of extreme events, health effects, food, water, and livelihood security, migration and forced displacement, loss of cultural identity, and other related risks.

2. Purpose: 

Oxfam is looking for a Micro-Small Enterprises that could be a co-applicant of Oxfam for any upcoming opportunities for a business working on the solutions for climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience in the areas of food, energy and water going forward.  For the interest of this EoI, a small enterprise is an entity having employs fewer than 50 persons, while a micro enterprise employs fewer than 10 persons.

3. Nature: 

These businesses must provide solutions in the areas of climate mitigation, adaptation or resilience that are focused on services or products in food, water and energy that contribute to poverty reduction. It must also provide services or products that contribute to poverty alleviation and economic growth while providing social and environmental benefits in the sectors like climate-smart agriculture, food loss and waste, water resilience, zero emission mobility and renewable energy. Besides, an enterprise should be a kind of innovative enterprises having products, services or processes which are new or substantially improved. In general, the enterprise shall be an entity:

• having operations for at least one year or prior 

• that are in either the seed or post-seed stage of their financing stage i.e., it has already developed a product or service, established a customer base and is on the path of to commercialize or raise capital growth. 

• having and are well on their journey to raise capital. 

• having a proven technology and are beyond the concept stage.

• demonstrating the ability to meet organizational due diligence requirements. (Accounting system, most recent organizational financial audit report, balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statements, organizational chart, operational policies (financial, human resource, logistics and procurement)

• Vision, mission, and purpose

• Year of establishment

• Type of business (private limited company, share company, etc)

• Type of business model (how does the enterprise generate revenues, what does the enterprise sell? In which market/s? Who are the buyers?

• Nature and type of product/market

• Up to date major accomplishments

• Estimate annual revenue.

• Estimate total capital of the enterprise, 

• Audit status (if any done as statutory, internal

• Business Development Strategy plan (if any)-enterprise growth strategy and objectives for the next 3-5 years

• Experience of working with any partner, sub-grant

• Enterprise structure (Governance structure; Management structure; Number/type of departments? Approximate number of staff (full-time and part-time); Physical locations etc)

• Social Impacts (the situation of poor people/women in the operation area, how money people/women are directly benefiting from the enterprise/business now, how does these people benefit, eg does the enterprise offers new market, better price, high yields, value additions, training etc?

• What are the specific barriers the enterprise/business is facing?
