We are looking for a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Technical Advisor for Advocacy who will provide technical support to the Market for Sanitation Project to ensure that the project's marketing efforts are inclusive, equitable, and gender and age sensitive through advocacy campaigns and marketing initiatives. The GESI Advocacy Technical Advisor will work closely with the project team to develop and implement strategies that promote social inclusion, address gender and age disparities, and ensure that all stakeholders are engaged in the project's marketing efforts. The Advisor will lead efforts to raise awareness, influence policy change, and engage diverse stakeholders in advancing GESI considerations within the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Gender Analysis/research: Conduct gender analysis to identify the needs, roles, and challenges of different stakeholders, including men, women, boys, and girls, in the sanitation sector to inform advocacy strategies and messaging.

  • Advocacy: Work with consortium members and key stakeholders to advocate for policy changes that promote gender equality and social inclusion in the sanitation sector.

  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies that promote gender equality and social inclusion in sanitation policies and practices.

  •  Lead the design and execution of marketing campaigns that effectively communicate GESI principles and promote behavior change around sanitation issues.

  • Utilize a range of channels, including digital platforms, traditional media, and community engagement, to reach diverse audiences with targeted advocacy and marketing content.

  • Marketing Strategy: support the development of marketing strategy that incorporates gender and social inclusion principles, ensuring that all promotional materials are inclusive and accessible to all stakeholders.

  • Social Inclusion: Collaborate with the project team to develop strategies for social inclusion, such as engaging marginalized groups, promoting access to sanitation services for people with disabilities, and addressing the needs of indigenous communities

  • Capacity Building: Provide training and technical expertise to project staff and partners on integrating GESI considerations into advocacy and marketing strategies development and implementation. 

  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor and evaluate the impact of advocacy efforts and marketing efforts on awareness, attitudes, and behaviors related to gender equality and social inclusion in sanitation. 

  • Learning: Document lessons learned and best practices in GESI integration. Create and maintain proper conditions for learning. Establish a safe environment for sharing of ideas, solutions, and difficulties and the capacity to detect, analyze and respond quickly to deficiencies. 

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with advocacy partners and allies to amplify messages and drive collective action on GESI-related challenges in the sanitation sector.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: develop and maintain relationships with consortium members and key stakeholders including government to integrate gender and social inclusion considerations into joint advocacy initiatives in the project's marketing efforts.

  • Represent the project in advocacy events, coalitions, and partnerships to advance GESI objectives within the sanitation sector.

  • Promote, uphold, and model a commitment to the efficient use of agency and donor resources. Help ensure compliance with USAID rules and regulations, including financial tracking and oversight of partner budgets. 

  • Support implementation of the Country Program/office gender strategy and safeguarding and protection strategies/action plans. 

  • Networking: Foster partnerships with other USAID implementing partners, national government networks, and stakeholders working on gender, youth, and social inclusion. 

  • Technical support; closely work with and provide technical support to regional GESI advisor to advocate for mainstreaming of GESI in to regional and woreda WASH program plan, implementation and monitoring and evaluation. 

Background 

Qualification and Experience:

  • Master's or BA degree in a relevant field (advocacy, communications, gender studies, international development, or related field).

  • At least 6 years of experience for masterā€™s degree and 8 years for BA degree in designing and implementing advocacy and marketing strategies for sanitation projects, with a focus on gender equality and social inclusion.

  • Proven track record of developing and implementing gender-sensitive and marketing advocacy campaigns.

  • Strong knowledge of advocacy techniques, social marketing principles, and behavior 

  • Change communication approaches.

  • Demonstrated ability to engage diverse stakeholders and build alliances for advocacy campaigns.

  • Strong understanding of gender analysis and social inclusion principles.

  • Excellent writing, storytelling, and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, including community leaders and local authorities.

  • Fluency in English language

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong strategic, analytical, systems thinking, and problem-solving skills, with capacity to see the big picture and ability to make sound judgment and decisions. 

  • Strong relations management abilities. Ability to relate to people at all levels internally and externally. Strategic in how you approach each relationship. 

  • Good technical writing skills, presentation, facilitation, training, mentoring, and coaching skills

  • Abilities with diverse/multi-disciplinary teams. 

  • Proactive, resourceful, solutions and results oriented.
