The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to providing trauma rehabilitative services to survivors of gross human rights abuses, including torture, and works toward a future in which gross human rights violations cease to exist and victims have hope for a new life. We are headquartered in Minnesota, USA with offices in Africa and the Middle East. We work locally, nationally, and internationally through programs that provide trauma rehabilitative services, conduct technical assistance and capacity building to human rights activists, civil society organizations, and local service providers around the world who can prevent and treat gross human rights abuses, and advocate for human rights and an end to gross human rights violations.

General Description of Role 

This is a full-time position. The Operation Assistant will be based in Shire to provide HR, finance and administration support. The Operation Assistant will report to the Finance and HR officer.

Main Responsibilities 

1. Administration Assistant Tasks: 

  • Receive visitors to the CVT compound in Shire and link them to appropriate staff and 
  • Deliver office correspondences in Shire and IDP centers. 

2. Finance Assistant Tasks: 

  • Maintain Petty Cash account in Shire, and disburse necessary cash for expenses upon verification that necessary authorizations are obtained and services/goods are received and 
  • Ensure all necessary documentations are gathered for expenses made through shire Petty Cash, and submit them timely to the Fin/HR Officer in Shire. 

3. Human Resources Assistant Tasks: 

  • Monitor implementation of CVT policies, including working hours and workplace behaviors in Shire and call attention to behaviors needing attention; 
  • Distribute, verify, and collect timesheets for all Shire and IDP -based staff; and 
  • Assist in recruitment process, including posting advertisement, contacting candidates, monitoring exams, and organizing interviews. 
  • Follow up and monitor daily national staff and community Mobilizers leave tracking sheets. 

4. Other Office Support Related Tasks 

  • Provide backstopping for general office support tasks, including assisting on inventory management and other tasks assigned to him/her by Senior Fin/HR Officer or his delegate /by Finance/HR and Logistic Officers.

  • 3. Is strictly committed to respect CVT’s confidentiality policy and refrain from using any information that s/he will know about a client outside of CVT 
  • 4. Will not approach (potential) beneficiaries for their involvement in non CVT activities without prior approval of CVT supervisor. 
  • 5. Keep absolute confidentiality on all information managed. Obligated to report any information to the supervisor when the security of CVT staff and/or of CVT beneficiary might become an issue. 
  • 6. This job profile can be adapted and changed according to the evolution of CVT activities.

Duty Station: Shire, Tigray, Ethiopia

Duration: Until May 2025 employment agreement

Start date: September 01, 2024

Supervisor: Finance and HR officer

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management, secretarial science and office management, Accounting or other related fields/ with a minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar setting for INGOs, or Diploma in the above-mentioned subjects with a three years’ experience in a similar setting for INGO’s may be considered. 
  • Excellent computer skills, especially strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word. 
  • Must be fluent in Tigrigna, Amharic and English, written and spoken. 
  • High level of attention to detail. 
  • Able to work independently, self-motivated. 
  • Good team player: able to take direction and work collaboratively with others. 
  • Flexible and able to adapt to change.
