Working at VSO
VSO is the worldâs leading international non-governmental organisation that works through volunteers to create a fair world for everyone. In 2022/23, over 7,700 dedicated individuals from across the globe volunteered with VSO, bringing their abilities to support almost 11 million people in 35 countries.
Our work centres on those who are left out by society â those living in extreme poverty or with disability and illness. Those who face discrimination and violence because of their gender, sexuality, or social status. Those who are at risk from disaster, disease, and conflict.
But they are not passive beneficiaries of aid; they are the âprimary actorsâ at the heart of our efforts. From their perspective, we define the issues, opportunities, and solutions that drive sustainable, local-led change. These individuals are the key agents of their own transformation.
Role purpose
Project Background and contextual Information
The Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE) is one of VSO Ethiopia Projects of a 7-year and âŹ134 million program funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that aims to create a prosperous future for 230,000 young women and men in the Middle East, North Africa, Sahel & West Africa and the Horn of Africa regions. The Fund will be supporting initiatives in 11 focus countries that will offer youth, particularly young women, job opportunities that are demand-driven and productive, offering a stable income and safe working conditions, contributing to their personal development and social protection.
The private sector, civil society and knowledge institutions will be invited to submit proposals geared to scalable solutions for creating more and better jobs and income-generating opportunities for youth. Solutions will in particular focus on an integrated approach that addresses the shortcomings on the demand side (jobs) and supply side (skills) and bridging the mismatch between these two in the labor market.
Horn Afrique Poultry Farm (HAPF) is a leading poultry company based in the Somali Region, specializing in high-quality chicken and egg production. Established in July 2019, HAPF operates with more than 30,000 layer and meat-type chickens. Currently located in Kebele 10 and 19, Jigjiga town, HAPF is in the process of expanding its operations to other cities and states, where it launched a full-fledged poultry production, feed mill, and hatchery unit on a 17,000m2 plot of farmland.
As of March 2024, HAPF has created direct job opportunities for more than 100 local communities, improved and matched for more than 115 young women and men with plans to increase this number over time. Additionally, HAPF is committed to promoting refugee self-reliance and generating economic opportunities for host communities by implementing Innovative Agent Models in Awbare and Kebribeyah refugee camps. Recognizing the potential to expand its impact, HAPF is considering intervention in the Dollo-ado area, which hosts the largest refugee population camps in Ethiopia, with over 250,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
In order to achieve this ambitious target, HAPF requires technical assistance in developing their digital strategy. The role involves supporting HAPF, one of CFYE's Implementing Partners (IPs), to establish digital solutions, specifically leverage digital technologies such as Odoo, an ERP software platform that offers a comprehensive suite of business applications to enhance HAPF's operational efficiency, market presence, and growth prospects within the poultry industry.
