ABOUT SG&Rs Global Food Security and Agriculture portfolio

SG&Rs Global Food Security and Agriculture portfolio is working to strengthen agricultural markets, engage youth and women as critical leaders of the on- and off-farm workforce, and tackle the dual burden of malnutrition around the globe. RTIs work is helping foster stronger food systems, reduce malnutrition in all its forms, build resilience and engage the next generation of food security leaders. RTI is currently partnering on nearly 30 projects in East Africa, including activities focused on private sector-driven agricultural growth in Rwanda and market systems development in Kenya.

ABOUT THE PROJECT/PROGRAM

The purpose of the USAID/Ethiopia Food and Agriculture Systems Transformation (FAST) Activity is to increase access to healthy diets, particularly for women and children, by improving competitiveness, inclusiveness, and resilience of the Ethiopian food and agriculture system. FAST will also increase incomes gained from agriculture by as much as 40 percent over the next five years. To achieve its goals FAST must collaborate intensively with other USAID-funded projects working in the food and agriculture sector.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Environmental Compliance Assistant, based at the head office in Addis Ababa, is responsible for the environmental compliance requirements of the Project Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports the preparation of environmental description assessment works including defining environmental site description data requirement for Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

Work on the Environmental review Process and collects environmental description information around the investment premises and off-site locations for the Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

Support the preparation of Environmental Review Report (ERR) for subprojects as advised by the Environmental Compliance and Climate Officer for the Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

Undertakes site visits to investment sites, makes environmental audits, and provides technical support to implementers on the implementation of mitigation measures defined in the ERR for Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

Investigates partners environmental footprints such as Green House Gas (GHG) emission; waste disposal; safety, hygiene & sanitation; and agrochemicals use practices.

Supports the preparation of monitoring reports from field observations based on USAID Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Reporting (EMMR) template for Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

Closely works with the Environmental Compliance and Climate Officer in relation to Grants to be issued under the UKR supplemental funding.

Performs additional duties as assigned by Environmental Compliance and Climate Officer or other.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

BSc in Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology/Chemistry, or related fields, and at least 6 years of directly related experiences. Masters Degree with similar branch of learning and 4 years of directly related experience is highly preferred.

Demonstrable 4 years of experience in environmental management or technically relevant work experience in the agriculture value chain and food systems.

Experienced and trained in USAIDs Environmental Compliance procedures (Regulation 216) is desirable and USAID project experience is preferred. At least one years of USAID projects experience.

Knowledge of the Agriculture (Crop and Livestock) Value Chain and the Food System highly required.

Willingness to travel and work in remote areas including to areas difficult to easily access.

Excellent analytical and problem-solving capacities ability to identify issues with contractual implications, ensure consistent donor reporting and support teams in providing appropriate analyses of activities.

Good interpersonal skills and a good team player.

Ability to work independently and shoulder delegated authority.

Strong technical and analytic capacities and sound judgment

Professional fluency in English (both spoken and written) and strong command of Amharic is required, additional local language is a plus.

Excellent computer skills; Good proficiency in Microsoft Office significant experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
