Senior Nutrition Officer

Background

Mothers and Children Multi - Sectoral Development Organization (MCMDO) is an Ethiopian resident charity organization established in 1997 and re- registered in accordance with the charities and societies proclamation No 113/2019 with a certificate No 0022. MCMDO currently is being implementing more than 16 projects and development activities in Oromiya, SNNP Ethiopia, Somali, Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz, Tigray, Amhara, Harari, Dire Dawa and City Administration of Addis Ababa.

Role and Responsibilities

• Work closely with the Project coordinator and other team to achieve program objectives and targets effectively and efficiently
• Lead/support in the planning, implementation and monitoring of project activities 
• support the continuum of care of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition by strengthening screening, referral, admission to treatment, follow-up during treatment and prevention, and early identification of relapse. 
• Strengthening Screening and Early Detection, Early case-detection of SAM as essential to reduce the mortality risk of the child 
• Support Family-led Mid Upper Arm Circumference Measurement (FMUAC), and strengthening frequent contacts between AFD and caregivers for more active screening using colored MUAC tapes. 
• Training of AFD leader and AFD on family-led MUAC approach how to screen their children and by involving key community leaders and the children’s fathers, agricultural and pastoral extension activities, religious and community leaders using the distributed MUAC tapes during group events.
• Support Passive Screening, to further strengthen screening performance, adds weight-for-age screening (passive screening) at GMP, IMNCI and EPI consultations to ensure that cases of SAM are detected as early as possible. 
• Support preventing the occurrence of SAM by offering counselling to explain to caregivers the risk of MAM and SAM and the necessity of early treatment 
• The selection and support of community-based nutrition champions that actively promote the importance of a diverse nutrient- and energy-dense diet
• Strengthening Social and Behavior Change (SBC) preventive interventions to all caregivers of children aged 0-59 months focused counseling, Caregivers with MAM Children, Caregivers of Recovered SAM Children: 
• Raise community awareness on prevention of malnutrition, SAM, Capacity community, community leader and religious leaders on how to promote family-led MUAC and Strengthening family Folder 
• Ensure effectiveness of wasting prevention, early detection, and referral and engaging Alliance for Development (AFDs) and community structures.
• Training of AFD leaders’ comprehensive packages of SAM prevention, early detection, and referral and treatment
• Organize and follow up of AFD meeting with HEW and AFD leader                                   
• Training and capacity building for of HEWs on new treatment protocol using WAZ<-as admission criterion for both intervention and control Kebeles
• Conduct supportive supervision for AFD at each kebele to be supported at least once in every.
• Plan, organize, and follow up of Communication and coordination between Health Extension Workers (HEWs) and AFDs
• Conduct monthly review meeting at Kebele with Kebele leaders/ HEW and AFD and HEWs/HWs on linkage of HEWs and AFD
• Promote IYCF, Promotions Complementary food cooking demonstrations 
• Support home visit with collaboration AFD/HEW/HWs
• Provides technical support and training where required to all team members, and outreach team including health extension workers and AFD
• To do activities assigned by project Coordinator

Qualification and Experience

• BSc/Diploma in Health, Nutrition, Nursing or related field with a minimum least 5 years working experience in nutrition, nursing or related field for Diploma or 2 years for Bachelor degree in public health, Nursing nutrition or related field.
• Previous experience with managing community-based nutrition programming, community-based nutrition innovative initiative, is strongly recommended
• Proven capacity to supervise, train and coach local staff and community workers.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and representational and communications skills are essential, and a team-oriented work style is a necessity.
• Willingness and capacity to be flexible and accommodating when faced with difficult and frustrating working conditions
• Strong report writing and computer skills
• Essential computer literacy (word, excel)
• Highly motivated, flexibility, quick learning and team working;
• Fluent in spoken and written English, local language is mandatory
• Ability to lead teams and able to create good team sprit among the group.
• Strong computer (Microsoft skills), and interpersonal skills.
