About CVT:

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to heal survivors of torture and war trauma. We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture and war trauma, research and advocate for human rights and end the practice of torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, USA with offices in Africa and the Middle East. 

General objectives: To assist individuals, groups, and communities to recover from the effects of torture and war trauma, and enable them to rebuild their lives and their communities. To provide physiotherapy services in CVT’s Debrebirhan IDP centers. In addition, the Physiotherapist Supervisor will assist in the management and on-going supervision of the clinical work and program. The Physiotherapist Supervisor concurrently fulfills his/her job responsibilities and receives ongoing training and coaching to develop his/her clinical capacity in the areas of planning, management, administration, and supervision. The involvement of the employee into supervision tasks will be a progressive process taking into consideration the program needs and constraints and the growing capacity of the physiotherapist supervisor to perform his/her supervisory duties.  Physiotherapist Supervisor will report to Physiotherapist/Trainer clinically and Area manager administratively.

Job Duties 

PHYSIOTHERAPY PROVISION:            

  • Providing comprehensive physiotherapist support to survivors of war trauma and torture who have sought assistance by completing an initial screening and intake assessment; individual and group treatment plans; case management including timely referral, follow-up, and advocacy if necessary; home visits; and follow-up assessments. 
  • Carrying out individual or group physiotherapy sessions with clients affected by war trauma or torture. 
  • Facilitating of group physiotherapy processes, including selection of group members, planning the group process, and group facilitation. 
  • Providing interpretation between clients and other CVT staff members when needed. 
  • Ensuring that all required documentation is competed in a timely and professional manner. 
  • Ensuring that all work with clients is confidential and that ethical practices are observed at all times. 

 Develop the community’s awareness, understanding and engagement with the issues relating to mental health, war trauma, and torture. 

  • Assist in planning and implementing community mental health, war trauma and torture awareness and education campaigns and programs. 
  • Sensitize, problem solve, dialogue, and mediate with the wider population and community leadership about the issues of the war, torture, trauma and its impact on people in order to raise understanding, develop coping strategies and encourage those who need physiotherapy services to approach CVT. 

 Make the CVT services known and accessible to people whose psycho-social functioning has been impaired by their experiences of torture and war trauma. 

  • Identify children, teenagers, men, and women whose physical functioning may have been affected by war related experiences and encourage them to approach CVT for support. 
  • Develop the referral systems and encourage collaboration between local groups and leaders, CBOs, local and international NGOs, and government ministries. 
  • Attend interagency meetings to improve service delivery to our client groups and access opportunities to forward CVT’s work. 
  • Ensure that the reporting and documentation of these processes is completed and minutes of meetings are filed. 

 PHYSIOTHERAPY SUPERVISION: 

  • Assist Physiotherapist/Trainer in monitoring quality and consistency of physiotherapy services 
  • Clinical group supervision: reviewing group member’s intakes, preparing group treatment plan and sessions, attending sessions as an observer-supervisor, debriefing groups sessions with the facilitators, and ensuring therapeutic group process.   
  • In close collaboration with the M&E (and under the Physiotherapist-Trainer supervision), ensuring that targets, deadlines, ethical processes, proper documentation, and reporting procedures are adhered to. 
  • Assist the Physiotherapist-Trainer in the CVT weekly, monthly and yearly plan of the activities. 
  • Assist in other administrative and supervision activities as assigned by the Physiotherapist/Trainer. 
  • Organizing, preparing and chairing (as needed) team meetings as directed by the Physiotherapist-Trainer in relation to programmatic issues. 
  • Ensure appropriate administrative management of clients, including proper filing of all client assessment forms on weekly basis. 
  • Assist in training, mentoring and orienting staff: conduct internal trainings as appropriate, co-develop and organize training and orientation schedule and materials. 
  • Work closely with the Clinic Manager and Counseling Supervisor(s) to insure smooth IDT collaboration, including monitoring client files and facilitating interdisciplinary team (IDT) case discussions. 
  • Take responsibility in the management and clinical treatment of high-risk cases. 
  • Contribute to ensuring a positive team dynamic through role-modeling, conflict resolution and leading solution-focused discussions. 
  • Manage clinical equipment and supplies inventory. 

 External Collaboration and Trainings:   

  • With support from the Physiotherapist/Trainer, and in compliance with project objectives, identify and prioritize potential participants for CVT external training (community leaders, staff from health facilities, CBOs, NGOs and INGOs) 
  • Assisting in designing and providing appropriate trainings to these identified beneficiaries for local capacity building 
  • Assisting in coordinating services with other organizations assisting refugees in CVT’s area of operation and represent CVT in meetings as necessary 
  • Contributing to completing the documentation and reporting of external trainings 
  • With support from the Physiotherapist/Trainer, be a CVT advocate for best practices when addressing war trauma and torture survivors’ needs and when interacting with other actors operating in assistance to refugees (this includes awareness about CVT’s confidentiality/referral policies and ethics) 
  • Support the social worker in updating the CVT directory of services on regular manner by collecting data and contacts 

Promote Self-care through Support and Supervision 

  • Attending regular support, debriefing, case conferences, and supervision coaching meetings to ensure information and skill-sharing 
  • Attending trainings provided by CVT and other agencies as directed by Physiotherapist-Trainer
  •  Implementing Physiotherapist-Trainer recommendations and training in day-to-day clinical work 
  •  Providing feedback to Physiotherapist-Trainer on training and supervision. 
  •  Requesting support from Physiotherapist-Trainer or PTs as needed. 
  • Submit files to the Physiotherapist-Trainer for regular review and support. 
  • Setting personal and professional objectives for each week and month, planning the activities required to achieve these objectives. 
  • Submitting weekly and monthly statistics form and reports (in relation to Physiotherapy and supervision responsibilities). 
  • Setting and following through on a personal self-care schedule to avoid burnout and vicarious traumatization. 
  • Provide formal feedback to colleagues when requested for on-going performance evaluation and development

  • Strong commitment to serve beneficiaries of CVT’s project regardless their religion, gender, minority affiliation or ethnic/political background 
  • Is strictly committed to respect CVT’s confidentiality policy and refrain from using any information that s/he will know about a client outside of CVT 
  • Will not approach (potential) beneficiaries for their involvement in non CVT activities without prior approval of CVT supervisor. 
  • Keep absolute confidentiality on all information managed. Obligated to report any information to the supervisor when the security of CVT staff and/or of CVT beneficiary might become an issue. 
  • This job profile can be adapted and changed according to the evolution of CVT activities. 

Terms of Employment: Initial contract is from October 07, 2024 through to May 31, 2025 with 60 business days probationary period. Possibility of continuation thereafter will be dependent on the funding availability.

Duty Station:  Debre Birhan IDP sites, Amhara, Ethiopia.

Qualifications: 

Required 

  • University Degree in physiotherapy. 
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience. 
  • At least 1 year of leadership or management experience.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in Amharic and English.   
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.   
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member 
  • Experience working in local and regional contexts, knowledge of local areas and communities is desirable 
  • Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs o Able to work in stressful environments 

Preferred 

  •  Graduate degree in physiotherapy 
  •  Physiotherapy practicing license 
  • At least 6 years of relevant clinical experience
  • At least 2 years of leadership or management experience o Demonstrated training experience 
  • Experience working in humanitarian response 
  • Experience working in the Amhara Region, with a strong preference for candidates who have lived and worked with the IDPs in Debre Birhan.
