Optician

Overview 

The Optician or Dispensing Optician is responsible for assisting customers in achieving the correct eyeglasses and lens shape based on their eyesight or eye conditions. This role includes communicating with eye care professionals to receive and fulfill prescriptions, providing sample frames for fitting, and maintaining accurate customer data regarding prescriptions. The Optician ensures that all spectacles are properly glazed, fitted, and meet the prescribed requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Prescription Fulfillment:

• Glaze and fit spectacles as prescribed by the optometrist.

• Confirm that the spectacles provided are accurate according to the prescription.

Optical Workshop Management:

• Properly handle and maintain optical workshop instruments.

• Keep the optical workshop clean and organized.

• Request and manage consumables and materials needed for the optical workshop.

• Oversee and request maintenance for optical instruments as required.

Customer Service:

• Communicate effectively with customers to understand their eyewear needs and provide suitable options.

• Maintain professional integrity and build trust with patients.

Collaboration and Communication:

• Work closely with other eye care professionals to receive and send prescriptions.

• Provide sample frames to customers and assist in selecting appropriate eyewear.

Other 

• Perform other duties as required
   

Location: Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

Reports To: Head of Ophthalmology

Qualifications and Skills

Educational Requirements

• Diploma or high school completion with at least two years of experience in an optical workshop, preferably in a secondary eye care setting.

• Certificate of completion in reading prescriptions, glazing, and fitting is required.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in understanding optical axis and power.

• Adequate vision to read figures from a lens meter.

Professional Experience

• Previous working experience in an eye care service organization, health background organization, or NGO is mandatory.

• Experience running or leading an ophthalmic workshop is preferred.

Additional Skills

• Ability to achieve team goals while demonstrating organizational values and utilizing resources responsibly.

• Proactive with the ability to take initiative.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with exceptional interpersonal abilities.

• Ability to collaborate across departments and build effective relationships with both internal and external customers.

• Capability to work independently on assigned tasks while accepting direction on given assignments.

• Discretion and judgment in handling confidential information and issues.
