Jobs Position Distinctive Description 

The laboratory Technologist works closely with the Lab Technical Manager/supervisor to ensure the smooth running of the Branch laboratory technical service. He dedicatedly performs routine laboratory technician service in quality standard and maintains records and technician lab work is performed under his direct technical skills and senior technician intervention. He performs under overall supervision of the laboratory Technical Manager.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This job description is intended to provide an overview and main tasks, duties & responsibilities but it is not limited to the job description may be enriched and/or enlarged as deemed appropriate by WHCSC.

  • Follow up proper specimen collection, handling and processing steps, 
  • Provide guidance and instruction for quality specimen collection, proper patient identification and data entry,
  • Perform laboratory testing procedures as per the SOPs and protocols
  • Monitor the quality control results and test results, and properly report to the respective supervisor and patients, 
  • Properly manage and regulate efficient use of reagents and consumables
  • Result reporting within the established standard, 
  • Perform regular instrument calibration and preventive maintenance,
  • Perform inventory and supply management for reagents, consumables and instruments,
  • Record any incidents and report constraints to the T/Manager, 
  • Accomplish any tasks assigned by the T/Manager 
  • Train and mentor, any other laboratory personnel who is working with him/her
  • Comply with rules, regulation, policy and guidelines for quality laboratory service Quality assurance activities
  • Collaborate to boom-up service revenue boosting branch operation income and sales margin, 
  • Actively work together to build enabling work environment for branch team to increase productivity
  • Collaborate to produce performance reports persistently, submit and present them to T/Manger seeing it as significant part and parcel of jobs supplementing with performance data and narrative reports.
  • Perform additional work assignments when assigned by immediate supervisor or next authority asp.

    Reports to: Manager, Laboratory Technical and Sales Manager 

    Job purpose: Perform testing procedures (Hematology, clinical chemistry, immuno/hematology, microbiology, serology, coagulation, molecular, and others); monitor and evaluate laboratory activities; provide the necessary information for proper patient care; and ensure quality laboratory service carrying out a range of routine technical tasks and tests.  Be responsible for responsible for in testing and laboratory maintenance including recording data, sterilizing equipment and ordering and organizing supplies. Technicians usually perform lab work by following detailed instructions given by those with more education or experienced Lab Technical staff/manager. Assist in planning accomplish overall technical, service operation andsupport insales works aligned to overall activities of WHCSC.

    Staff Responsibility:  Guide and train Junior Laboratory Technician

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

  •  Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field of science 

  • 1/2 years of experience in Diagnostic laboratory

  • Competencies: technical, skills, and abilities, expertise & behavioral

  • Cable to efficiently operate automated laboratory analyzers, Infection Prevention, preventive maintenance, safety

  •  Great knowledge, skill and operation of lab equip and tools

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Effective time management skills, Ability to work with a team and independently when required

  • Highly integral and trustworthy, dynamics and responsive enough

  • Professional and attentive enough for attention to details, hospitable and customer service oriented 

  • Acquainted with decisive business acumen and computer literacy is required

Language skills

  1. English, Afan Oromo, and Amharic languages basic conversation and writing skills are plus.
