Job purpose

Perform complex technical work involving laboratory analysis of human samples including a variety of clinical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical chemistry, and urinalysis, as assigned; conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid; performs blood counts using microscope which are a combined tasks and duties of extensive and complex steps requiring manual manipulation and pipetting, close monitoring and control, evaluation of data, and careful and accurate work.

Assist in planning and leading and managing branch staff, accomplish overall technical, service operation andsales and marketing works aligned to overall activities of WHCSC. 

Functional relationship with: 

  •  Technician and technologist /Advance Lab Director/Manager/Branch manager/s, Center support at WHCSC

  • Local primary Government and financial organization personnel 

  • Local communities and external agencies as needed 

Jobs Position Distinctive Description 

The laboratory Technologist works closely with the Lab Director /Manager to ensure the smooth running of the Branch laboratory service. He keenly and dedicatedly performs routine laboratory tests in quality standard and maintains records and technical lab work is performed under his direct technical expertise and intervention. He performs under overall supervision of laboratory Manager and direct supervision of laboratory Supervisor.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This job description is intended to provide an overview and main tasks, duties & responsibilities but it is not limited to  the job description may be enriched and/or enlarged as deemed appropriate by WHCSC.

Perform analytical tests:

  • Evaluate specimens received by laboratory and organize workflow to provide optimum efficiency of testing and turnaround times of results,
  • Perform quality control, validation, and other quality activities to verify performance of assays,
  • Maintain equipment by performing assigned maintenance activities and troubleshoot unexpected problems for the equipment,
  •  Evaluate inventory of supplies and reagents and communicate order needs,
  • Operate complex equipment and computer programs related to laboratory equipment and other accessories.
  • Maintain records of test results and archives of data,
  • Maintain a safe, neat and clean work environment
  • Archiving and tracking of specimen

Quality assurance activities

  • Perform proficiency testing to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies,
  • Train of new laboratory staff and interns,
  • Assist department in writing and maintaining standard operating procedures of laboratory and document knowledge by reviewing and signing SOPs.
  • Record data to monitor temperatures and humidity of various equipment and environmental conditions.
  •  Follow established quality management policies and GLP practice,
  •  Perform and document corrective action, including follow-up monitoring to gauge the effectiveness of the corrective action. 
  • Lead in calibration of pipettes, thermometers, and other measuring equipment. 
  • Perform analytical tests in the laboratory as assigned by the Laboratory Quality Assurance Officer and immediately report any problems with tests, equipment or results to the sections heads/ Quality Assurance Officer. 
  • Follow all Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures as outlined in the WHCS Laboratory Quality Assurance Manual. 
  • Perform the following routine laboratory duties: keep lab work areas clean and organized: perform routine maintenance of lab equipment: monitor the status of laboratory supplies:  complete QA/QC assignments: proper documentation in the laboratory,

Laboratory administrative duties

  • Perform laboratory administrative duties by receiving samples from customers or users as needed, calculating and recording analytical results in the appropriate logbook, data entry in the LIMS, 
  • Maintain chemical/equipment traceability records, document QA/QC requirements, and generate control charts.
  • Assist Quality Assurance Officer and Laboratory Manager with administrative duties as necessary including but not limited to the following: generating and/or reviewing analytical reports, contacting lab users or customers, monitoring turn-around times, maintain smooth laboratory workflow. 
  • Other duties; responsible for the compliance to standards and directives; ensure effective communication between laboratory and WHCS management. 
  • Assist in development of sustainable laboratory business proposals, assist in coordinating activities for field activities and other activities that shall be assigned by the Laboratory Manager or Laboratory Director.
  • To assist in facilitation and execution of daily, bi/weekly, monthly, staff and management meetings asp,
  • To assist in staff performance appraisal program and forwarding relevant inputs/feedback, 
  • To represent the branch as technologist at the different committees functioning when assigned, 
  • To actively welcome and serve clients on daily routine.
  • Coachesā€™ lab technician and lab technologists to ensure that she/he knows his performance expectations,
  • Provide independently day ā€“to day lab service operations and maintenance of branch labs, equipment and technical tasks meeting required standard, 
  • Assist in smooth functioning of technical and sales operations, set performance target, and ensure overall client satisfaction on overall service,
  • Meet steadily with clients seeing them they are highly significant for the existence of the company and committed to provide quality and standard services in all packages, 
  • Build hospitable and intensive Customer relationship seeing it as decisive elements of your jobs,
  • Promote intensively the lab service at the branch to local markets and surroundings applying different sales and marketing tactics and strategy liaising with branch team, 
  • Assist in proper management of laboratory story and stock items in non-delinquent and safe ways, 
  • Collaborate to boom-up service revenue boosting branch operation income and sales margin, 
  • Actively work together to build enabling work environment for branch team to increase productivity
  • Collaborate to produce performance reports persistently, submit and present them to division Director or next line authority seeing it as significant part and parcel of jobs supplementing with sales data and narrative reports.
  • Perform additional work assignments when assigned by immediate supervisor or next authority asp.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements:

  •  BSC degree in Laboratory Technology with Professional License as a Junior/Senior Medical laboratory Technologist approved by food, Medicine and Health care Administration and control Authority of Ethiopia.

  •   4 years of experience in Diagnostic laboratory

Competencies: technical, skills, and abilities, expertise & behavioral

  • Excellent practical, theoretical and hands-on practice in laboratory work 

  • Outstanding knowledge, skill and operation of lab equip and tools

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Effective time management skills, Ability to work with a team and independently when required

  • Highly integral and trustworthy, Dynamics and responsive enough

  • Professional and attentive enough for attention to details, Hospitable and customer service oriented

  • Acquainted with decisive business acumen and computer literacy is required
