INTRODUCTION 

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), an international non-governmental organization (NGO), has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. DRC promotes and supports solutions to the problems faced by refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs), and migrants. DRC Ethiopia began operations in 2009 and has been responding to the needs of refugees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and vulnerable host communities ever since.  DRC Ethiopia currently has programs implemented through five area offices (AO) in Gambella, Tigray, Somali (Jijiga & Dollo Ado) and Afar regions, as well as its country office (CO) in Addis Ababa.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

Under the supervision of the Protection Assistant-PSS, the community worker- will support the protection assistant-PSS in implementing psychosocial support activities delivered by DRC in shire and Sheraro IDP sites. Specifically, he/she will report protection incidents affecting the community in the site, facilitate the PSS activities on the ground, identified vulnerable people who may need PSS service and provide referral service including mobilise individuals to attend in the PSS sessions and aware to community about overall activities of DRC.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Identify individuals for the trauma focused group counselling, individual counselling and psychoeducation session   

  •  Facilitate the psycho education and focused trauma informed group session in the IDP sites 

  • Report periodically to DRC main protection incidents affecting the community in the site and particularly vulnerable people (this includes informing about security incident, new arrival, gaps in terms of service and other unsafe situation happening to some people).
  • Provide information to the Community on the available services and assistance ensuring that it reaches marginalised people 
  • Offer to refer vulnerable individuals to specialized PSS service and other specific essential services available within the site including to DRC programme. 
  • Organise and conduct other type of sessions and activities such as recreational activities in the PSS centre 
  • Work hands in hands with the other protection Assistant -PSS to ensure the good implementation of the project
  • Support the Protection Assistant-PSS in the development of daily, weekly and monthly reports/ Provide imputes for weekly and monthly reports. 
  • Take on any other tasks required by her/his supervisor in the limit on his/her expertise and skills

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Should be over 18 years old: 
  • Should not be a community leader
  • Is trusted by her/his community and is a role model of desired behaviour: 
  • Have mediation, help others, respect others and treat people’s personal information in a confidential manner
    • Free from substance abuse  
    • Someone with no suspicion of abuse or violent behaviours towards members of their families and others 
  • Has the ability to read and write 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills who is comfortable speaking in front of others
  •  Leadership qualities and show willingness to work for their community and provide support to individuals   
  •  listens to vulnerable individuals and groups and represent their voice at small and large forums
  • NGO experience/ Social or community worker/ in protection-PSS activities is desirable 
  • Willing to take an oral test and score the minimum value  

EDUCATION: (include certificates, licenses, etc.)

  • Completed in grade 10th / 12th, Diploma or bachelor’s degree in social science studies, and other relevant fields in well recognized college or university. 

LANGUAGE: (indicate fluency level)

  • Good proficiency in written and spoken Tigrigna is required
