Job Overview: -

FIDO, a prominent NGO in Ethiopia, established in 2002, specializes in development and emergency projects across various regions of the country. The organization is seeking a visionary and highly skilled Deputy Executive Director of Finance, Grants, and Compliance to help manage its financial strategies, ensure compliance with funding requirements, and support the organization's continued growth and mission.

This position needs a highly motivated, adaptable , reliable, certified and chartered  finance professional with a Masters in Accounting and Finance along with IT qualifications. The organization  seeking to hire an individual who can utilize his/her professional and technical skills developed through past work experience in accounting, operations management (logistics and procurments), financial controlling and auditing as well as operational project coordination. Who also could bring to the table a very methodological, focused work approach and a strong drive to see things through to completion. 

The role of a Deputy Executive Director of Finance, Grants, and Compliance in FIDO is critical to maintaining financial health, ensuring grant compliance, and overseeing the organization's general internal controls. The position requires a strategic balance between meticulous financial management, effective grant administration, and robust compliance frameworks. 

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management
Budgeting: Help with the preparation and management of the annual budget, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.

Financial Reporting: Make sure to prepare regular financial reports for internal stakeholders, donors, and the Board of Directors.

Audit Preparation: coordinate annual audits and work closely with external auditors to ensure accurate and compliant audit reports.
Conduct a financial analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for the organization. Implement and monitor cost control measures to maximize resource use.

Grants Management
Grant Writing and Submissions: Oversee the preparation and submission of grant proposals, ensuring alignment with funding requirements and strategic priorities.
Grant Compliance: Ensure the management of all grants in compliance with donor requirements, which includes timely reporting and adherence to specific grant conditions.
Fund Allocation: Supervise the allocation of funds from grants to various departments and projects, ensuring optimal utilization and avoiding discrepancies.
Financial Tracking: Implement systems to track grant expenditures and report on the financial status of grants.

Compliance and Risk Management
Policy Development: Develop, update, and enforce organizational policies and procedures in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with local, national, and international laws, including labor laws, tax regulations, and non-profit sector standards.
Internal Controls: Establish and maintain robust internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting.
Risk Assessment: Conduct regular risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies.

Team leadership and development
Team Management: Lead and manage the finance, grants, and compliance teams, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
Professional Development: Identify training and development opportunities for staff to enhance their skills and competencies.
Performance Appraisal: Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback to employees in finance, grants, and compliance roles.

Strategic Planning and Implementation
Strategic Input: contribute to the organization's strategic planning process and guarantee the integration of financial and compliance considerations.

Operational Planning: Develop and implement financial and operational plans to support strategic initiatives.

To ensure efficient resource allocation, align financial and human resources with programmatic needs.

Stakeholder Engagement
Executive Director Relations: Maintain positive relationships with donors, providing them with timely financial and impact reports.
Board Support: Collaborate closely with the Executive Director, providing him with the information and analysis necessary for informed decision-making.

Collaborate with partners and stakeholders to coordinate financial and compliance efforts.

Innovations and Enhancements
System Improvements: To increase efficiency, identify and implement improvements in financial management, grant administration, and compliance systems.
Utilize technology to streamline financial, grant, and compliance processes.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Essential Qualifications
    Educational Background: Advanced degree (MBA or more) in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • He/she should have extensive (10+ years of work experience) in finance, Grant Management, and compliance roles within the non-profit sector. 
    Professional Certifications: A CPA (Certified Public Accountant), CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), or equivalent certification is highly desirable. 

Core Skills

  • Financial Acumen: Strong knowledge of financial management, accounting principles, budgeting, and treasury management.
  • Grant Savvy: An in-depth understanding of grant acquisition, management, and compliance.
  • Compliance Expertise: Deep knowledge of regulatory requirements and internal control frameworks.
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to interpret complex financial data and make sound decisions.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting and donor engagement.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership and team management skills. Organizational Skills: A high level of organizational skills and attention to detail are essential.
